Senior Hogla Deida Cortez - 2020 Awardee, Soon to be a Pirate

Updated: Jun 9, 2020

Former "Miss Sunnyside" to become a Pirate at Whitworth University in Spokane next fall.

Deida has a career goal to be an Immigration Attorney and will attend Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington next fall.

The Sunnyside High School Alumni Fund awards 2 scholarships each year to deserving graduating seniors based on their academic achievement, educational goals, community service and school involvement. Our second recipient for the Class of 2020 is Hogla Deida Cortez. She prefers to go by Deida (her middle name) and will graduate this year from Sunnyside High School with a 3.80 GPA and in the "Top 5%" of this year's graduates.

Her favorite quote is a Jimmy Hendrix's one, "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace" and is a good reminder to all of us as we now navigate the world we currently live in.

The selection committee was impressed with her school involvement and community service. Deida was active in Cheer, Volleyball, Tennis and Track, a member of Link Crew and president of SHS Pep Club. During the 2018-2019 school year she served our community as "Miss Sunnyside" and was also selected "Miss Congenially" by fellow contestants. Deida has served over 130 hours of community service.

During her junior year she was full-time running start student at Yakima Valley College and made the Dean's List. The college credit earned will go a long way in giving her a boost in her undergraduate requirements at Whitworth. Her career goal is to earn a Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree and become an Immigration Attorney. Deida comes from a large family and has 3 brothers and 3 sisters and except for a few elementary grades, has attended Sunnyside Schools almost all her life.

When asked about SHS experience she wrote in her application, "I learned to be both a better person and student. I enjoyed every moment of my high school journey", ....., but I got out there and took advantage of all opportunities to grow as a person. Not everything goes as planned and this whole year has taught me just that."

Deida, congratulations and best of luck! We're pulling for you! GO GRIZZLIES!
