Fatama Tellez Receives Endowed Alumni Scholarship

Graduate Fatima Tellez received a $3,000 Endowed Scholarships from the Sunnyside High School Alumni Scholarship Fund and has been accepted to attend the University of Washington.

Ms. Tellez is the daughter of Carolina Avendano (Mom) & Fredy Tellez (Dad) and is the oldest of three children. Fatima is a cancer survivor. At age twelve she successfully underwent treatment at Seattle Children's Hospital.


Her younger brother Christopher (age 13) and sister Elizabeth Caroline (age 10) have witnessed her success and determination and will follow in her footsteps as future Grizzlies at Sunnyside High School.


Fatima not only graduated from SHS with an impressive 3.8 GPA, she also simultaneously worked and successfully earned her AA degree from Yakima Valley College and will start UW as a junior this fall, where she plans to pursue a degree in Advanced Biology with an eventual career as a Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant.


Fatima was a 3 year letter award winner in tennis and was active in a variety of Clubs at SHS including Key Club, DECA, National Honor Society and Latino Culture Club.

"...My aspiration of becoming an Anesthesiologist Assistant in a big city started at the age of twelve when undergoing chemotherapy at Seattle Children's Hospital."

In her application packet she wrote: "A big personal goal for me is to achieve financial stability, have a loving family, and fulfill my dreams of becoming a Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant at Seattle Children's Hospital. My aspiration of becoming an Anesthesiologist Assistant in a big city started at the age of twelve when undergoing chemotherapy at Seattle Children's Hospital. My experience ignited a desire to return to Seattle Children's to be a part of their medical team.

Presenting the ceremonious big check is Marilyn (Bos) Mears from the SHS Class of '72 to Fatima.

Ms. Fatama recognized SHS English Teacher John Kranz as one of her favorite instructors that provided direction, valuable instruction and inspiration for her success at SHS.

ABOUT THE ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP

The Endowed Scholarship Scholarship was one of two such scholarships awarded this year. Donations to the Endowment Fund are never spent, but invested. The Endowment will continue to grow over the years, allowing the Alumni Fund to award additional scholarships to more seniors every year.
