By Tom Nelson, SHS Class of 1967 and Fund Board Member
Maeve Weets is the first SHS graduate to receive the Class of 1967 Memorial Scholarship. Maeve is the daughter of Ivy and Kirk Weets and is the youngest of three siblings. She has been accepted to Spokane Community College where she will commence a two-year culinary program culminating with an associate’s degree in Culinary Arts. Her career goal is to own and operate a café. She plans on learning all aspects of operating a restaurant, including being a waitress, bartender, manager and business owner.
As a 4.0 student and SHS 2024
Co-Valedictorian, Maeve has proven she has the motivation and desire to progress on any career path. Adding to her scholastic achievements, Maeve was active in school government and varsity sports. She was treasurer for her Freshman and Sophomore classes, ASB assistant treasurer in Junior year and ASB treasurer for her Senior year. Maeve lettered in Girls’ soccer, Fastpitch, Basketball and Girls’ golf.
In addition to her stellar academic record, Maeve has given much back to her school and community with over a 100 hours of community service, helping the new basketball coach with a summer tournament and with the 2023 SHS graduation.
"I have worked very hard to get where I am today and getting one of these scholarships will help me be able to pay for my schooling to pursue my dream.“
Maeve is excited to be attending Spokane Community College, not only for the culinary program but her cousin, Brody lives in Spokane and sister, Marlee, will be moving there soon.
In her scholarship application Maeve was passionate about her accomplishments and her future goals. She wrote: "I had to not only keep my grades all A’s but I also had to take five college classes. This is not easy to do when also participating in clubs and sports at the varsity level. I have worked very hard to get where I am today and getting one of these scholarships will help me be able to pay for my schooling to pursue my dream.“
About the Class of 1967 Memorial Scholarship
Working with the SHS Alumni Scholarship Fund's Board of Directors, the SHS Class of 1967 has created an "Endowed Scholarship Fund" in honor of classmates who have died. Initially, the Class of 1967 will award a yearly $2,500 scholarship to a deserving SHS graduate. As the fund grows, the amount of the scholarship will increase, and the number of annual scholarships will hopefully increase. This Endowed Fund falls under the 501(c) 3 non-profit umbrella of the the SHS Alumni Scholarship Fund and is recognized as a non-profit by the IRS and also the Washington Secretary of State's Office. The Non-Profit is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. The Board has set a goal to expand representation with a least one member from each decade of graduates.
