Like the "Star Wars" saga and Luke Skywalker the force is definitely with Luke Binfet a 2023 graduate of Sunnyside High School and the recipient of one of the Sunnyside High School Alumni Fund Endowment Scholarships. Luke is the son of Troy and Rachael Binfet and moved to the Sunnyside during his high school years from Bickelton High School.
The scholarship reviewers were extremely impressed with Luke's application. His list of activities, community service and student activities filled the entire application section which is limited to 2,400 characters including returns and spaces. From student government elect ASB leadership positions, state high school championships in cross country and track, Team Captain selections, and countless hours giving back to his community by Luke made his submittal among the top received.
Luke graduated with a 3.9 GPA and will attend the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA). The USMMA is a small college of 1000 future seamen in Kings Point, New York, whose graduates are vital to the effective operation of our merchant fleet for both commercial and military transport during war and peace.
When asked what famous quote motivates him, Luke replied with a famous one from Thomas Edison, "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work."
Luke was thankful for all the adult influence in his life, especially Mr. Roger Craver (8th, Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior History Teacher, Cross Country Coach, Track Coach, ASB Advisor). When asked what famous quote motivates him, Luke replied with a famous one from Thomas Edison, "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work."
